Jinja is a city and district in the Eastern part of Busoga Sub-region and lies on the north shores of Lake Victoria across River Nile, approximately 81km east of Uganda’s capital Kampala. It is the 2^nd largest urban district of Uganda next to Kampala. Jinja city is arguably Uganda’s heart beat and a gem of unrivaled beauty.

Jinja city was founded in 1901 by British settlers and sits at an average elevation of 1204 meters (3,950ft) above sea level. The origin of the name “Jinja” comes from the language of 2 tribal groups (the Baganda and Basoga) who lived on either sides of River Nile and it mean “rock” in both languages.

Locally known as “omuga kyiyila” the source of River Nile was internationally discovered by John Hanning Speke in 1858 and he became the first European explorer to reach this point and discovered the source of the longest river in world which starts in Uganda passing through South Sudan, Sudan, Egypt and finally to the Mediterranean sea.
