Jinja city was founded in 1901 by British settlers and sits at an average elevation of 1204 meters (3,950ft) above sea level. The origin of the name “Jinja” comes from the language of 2 tribal groups (the Baganda and Basoga) who lived on either sides of River Nile and it mean “rock” in both languages.

  1. Source of the Nile

Locally known as “omuga kyiyila” the source of River Nile was internationally discovered by John Hanning Speke in 1858 and he became the first European explorer to reach this point and discovered the source of the longest river in world which starts in Uganda passing through South Sudan, Sudan, Egypt and finally to the Mediterranean sea.

Most tourists from all over the world come to see this exact point where the Nile separates from Lake Victoria. While at the source of the Nile you cannot miss to see the Mahatma Gandhi’s monument which is right next to the docking point and the Speke monument which is visible while on a boat.
